广东外语外贸大学是1995年5月由广州外国语学院和广州对外贸易学院合并组建的一所具有鲜明国际化特色的广东省属重点大学，是华南地区国际化人才培养和外国语言文化、对外经济贸易、国际战略、涉外法治研究的重要基地。广州外国语学院于1964年11月设立、1965年7月正式招生，是原国家教委（现教育部）直属的36所大学之一。广州对外贸易学院成立于1980年12月，是原国家外经贸部（现商务部）直属院校。
建校以来，广外人坚持社会主义办学方向，贯彻落实党和国家的教育方针，顺应经济社会发展和高等教育改革的需求，依托钟灵毓秀的南粤山水，根植务实进取的岭南文化，锐意求新、执着探索，加快学科建设步伐，提高教育质量和科研水平，增强社会服务能力，在不同的年代、不同的校园，为国家的外交、外经贸及国际文化交流等事业做出了独特的贡献。
FOREWORD

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS/Guangwai), founded on the basis of Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages (GIFL) and Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade (GIFT) in May, 1995, is a key provincial university with distinctive international characteristics and a pivotal base of international talent cultivation and of research on foreign languages and cultures, international trade, international strategies, and international rule of law in South China. GIFL, established in November, 1964 and starting its admission in July, 1965, was one of the 36 universities under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. GIFT, established in December, 1980, was under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (now the Ministry of Commerce).
Since its founding, GDUFS has adopted the socialist orientation to higher education, implemented the educational guidelines of the Party and the state, and met the needs of social development and higher education update. Based in Guangdong endowed with a wealth of talent and fantastic landscapes, and rooted in Lingnan culture underlining pragmatic and enterprising attitudes, GDUFS has unswervingly pursued innovation, accelerated disciplinary construction, improved the quality of teaching and scientific research, and built capacity for social service. On different campuses down the ages, GDUFS has made unique contribution to China’s foreign affairs, international trade, and international cultural exchange.
